How to Choose the Right Architect

Finding the right architect is relatively easy if you follow some basic steps.

Step 1 - Internet Research

Research all the available architects in your town and have a look at the type of work that they do. Architects usually display their designs on their website. Internet can be a quick way of researching the architectural firms before you visit them in person.

Step 2 - Recommendation

As well as internet research, ask your friends if they know of a good architect. One of the best ways to choose an architect is by word of mouth.

Step 3 - go for a drive

Have a look at any houses you see under construction that you particularly like and contact the architect.

Step 4 - The interview

Interview the architect. Bring ideas and sketches you made. You can interview several architects and see which one relates best to your project and which one is most enthusiastic. At the interview, make sure that the architect is interested in your project.

Step 5 - References

Ask for client references and contact them without the architect present. Ask them what they liked about the architect and what they did not like about them.

Step 6 - Ask the architects to provide a quote

Step 7 - Select the architect you feel most comfortable with and that offers best value.

Step 8 - Have a legal person review the contract before signing. This is money well spent.

Step 9 - Sign the contract and begin design work.

Step 10 - Make sure that you regularly contact the Architect for progress updates.
