Civil Engineering

Civil_Engineering_400Civil engineers design roads, buildings, airports, dams or water supply systems. They have to take into account things like costs or weather resistance. Civil engineering is the oldest branch of engineering. Some civil engineers manage people and projects. Others may oversee a construction site. Others work in design, construction, teaching or research. There are specialties within this category such as structural, construction, transportation and environment.

A civil engineer has to design structures that meet standard codes of the specific area where he works. Bridges, tunnels or other structures designed and built by civil engineers have to facilitate a smooth flow of traffic but should also allow for future expansions. Water treatment, involving sewage plants, systems for delivering fresh water or handling waste water is one other domain where civil engineers are needed.

A civil engineer will integrate construction needs and knowledge into drawing specifications, equipment purchase orders, subcontracts and project schedules.

While there are different paths for the career of a civil engineer, there is plenty of room for growth within this profession. Civil engineers are responsible for the interface between the projects created by them and the impact they have on the world surrounding them. Civil engineers are the people building the infrastructure of the world.

Civil engineers will be needed in the future as the population grows since they are the ones who will design and build things. They will also need to fix and replace buildings or roads. Starting from an architect’s drawing, a civil engineer will have to assess the materials used in a construction project, to think about the impact a structure has on its surroundings and finally, to be responsible for the creating of a safe, economical and environmentally-friendly structure.

An initiative launched by the engineering profession in Australia is trying to increase the understanding of this profession by the general public and inspire more Australians to consider a career in engineering. The CEO of Engineers Australia, Peter Taylor, has voiced the concerns raised by a benchmark study conducted by the engineering body, related to a low level of understanding about what this profession involves. The results of the study have revealed that there is a decline in the number of young Australians opting for an engineering career although there is a shortage in the workforce in this domain.

The Make it So campaign, launched by Engineering Australia is encouraging the general public to offer practical and creative ideas, comment on other people’s ideas or follow them. Australians have singled out water sustainability as one of the primary concerns and as a domain where civil engineers can assist in turning visionary projects into reality.
